The Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr Austin Tam-George, has called on civil servants in the state to reciprocate the gesture of Governor Wike-led administration by showing commitment to duty and remaining accountable at all times.
Tam-George made the call while addressing journalists at the  state secretariat complex in Port Harcourt, shortly after the visit of the governor to civil servants in Rivers State, yesterday.
The commissioner said the Wike administration has , within few months in the saddle, cleared the backlog of salaries of civil servants, and also paid the arrears of pension to pensioners in the state.
He pointed out that while, the governor will remain committed to the welfare of workers in the state, the civil servants should also ensure that they put in their best in service delivery to move the state forward.
The commissioner cautioned against sharp practices in ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) of government, and stated that the era of fraudulent practices in civil service has gone.
He described civil servants as critical stakeholders in the process of governmance, and emphasised that the success of government depends on the input of civil servants.
Similary, the commissioner has called on the management of the Rivers State Television (RSTV) to prioritise news broadcast in local languages for effective dissemination of information and government programmes to the people.
Addressing a special delegation of RSTV staff, led by the General Manager, Pastor Dafini Gogo-Abe, during a visit to his office, Tam-George said it was the responsibility of the media to mobilise the people to be abreast of government’s policies and programmes, and assured the commitment of the Wike-led administration to the development of the state media.
The commissioner alerted Rivers people against what he described as the ‘rise of fundamentalism of the All Progressives Congress (APC) opposition in Rivers State, who want to impose their will on the people” and called on Rivers people to be vigilant against such authoritarian tendencies.
Earlier, a member of the RSTV’s delegation and chairman of the station anniversary committee, Mrs Beatrice Paago had said that the team was in the commissioner’s office to intimate him on the programme of activities for the 30th anniversary celebration of RSTV coming up in March, 2016
In her remarks, the General Manager, Pastor Dafini Gogo-Abe, assured the commissioner of the commitment of RSTV to the mobilisation of Rivers people through its rich programme content.
