The Rivers State
Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Boma Iyaye, has described sports as a veritable instrument for self realisation for youths.
Hon. Iyaye, said this at the just concluded maiden edition of Go Round/SWAN Secondary Schools Athletics Championship held at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.
According to him, all over the world, government funds sports through a huge financial outfit, saying that, the responsibility is not for the government alone and urged well-meaning individuals and corporate bodies to support the government in sponsoring such sporting event.
Saying that if this is done our youth would stay out of the streets and get engaged in meaningful activities, it would also foster peace, unity and growth in the development of sports in the state and in the country at large.
Earlier, the sponsor of the competition Bro. Felix Obuah  said that, beyond being a star in football at a point in time, which game him the encouragement to sponsor Go Round Football Club, he is also a good athlete.
“It is this passion that is driving me now to sponsor this competition. We have to go back to the grassroots, go back to the creeks, to the streets, and to the schools, catch them young, harness their talents and reclaim our lost glories, so that these youths would be meaningfully engaged as well as distract them from social vices. It would also serve as an avenue to generate income in the face of the current challenging economic crisis”, Bro Obuah said.
He thus promised to sustain the competition annually in order to keep the programme alive.
