Six Killed In Cult Clash In Rivers

The Rivers State Police command says it was the battle for supremacy between rival cult groups that led to the killing of six persons in Omoku town in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of the state, over the weekend.
However, several reports had it that suspected cultists killed 15 persons and beheaded six of them during the attack in the community.
The state Police Public Relations Officer , DSP Ahmad Muhammad while confirming the incident to journalists on Saturday, said six persons who were identified as members of a cult group were killed.
The state police spokesperson told journalists that the police had brought the situation under control, adding that the incident was a battle for supremacy between warring cult groups in the area.
According to him, “ the incident is believed to be a battle of supremacy between these factional cult groups in the area. We are  fully in-charge in the area, our men have been deployed while reinforcement  has also been dispatched to the troubled spots within the town”, he stated.
The Tide learnt that unknown gunmen numbering over 40 armed with weapons and machetes stormed Omoku town, an economic nerve centre of ONELGA at about 7pm, Friday evening and killed over 15 persons and beheaded six out of the victims.
A source who narrated the incident to our reporter on the condition of anonymity said the hoodlums took over Omoku town for over three hours without any resistance from the security operatives in the area, adding that the most affected area during the attack were Sabo Road, Odieti, Usoairi and  Obakata quarters.
The source further stated that a couple and two brothers of same parents were among those identified killed during the clash by the rampaging cultists, adding that the town was deserted and people ran to their houses and bushes for safety.
It would be recalled that Omoku town and indeed ONELGA have come under similar cult related attack in recent times. It was learnt that insecurity in the local government area led to the dissolution of the local government council by the  state government early January, this year.
