The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has pledged government’s support to the establishment of a College of Medicine in the state-owned University of Science and Technology (RSUST).
Making the pledge while playing hosting to the Governing Council of the university led by retired Justice Iche Ndu at Government House in Port Harcourt, Wike said he will support the establishment of the College of Medicine and Teaching Hospital in RSUST in fulfillment of his campaign promises.
The governor commended the governing council for the smooth working relationship between it and the staffers, urging them to sustain the tempo and work towards appointing a substantive Vice Chancellor.
Earlier, the Pro-Chancellor of the RSUST, Justice Iche Ndu, congratulated the governor for his recent victory at the Supreme Court, and in improving the infrastructure of the university, especially that of the Faculty of Law.
On the proposed College of Medicine in the university, Ndu disclosed that already a committee has been established to provide a blueprint for the programme.
If things go as planned, he hinted that the college would be admitting in the next academic session.
He further stated that the approval of the setting up of the College of Medicine would be hinged on the take-off of the teaching hospital for the university billed for Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital (BMSH) and other selected hospitals across the state, which he believed, would improve the quality of healthcare in the state.
