Piracy: Seafarers Blast NIMASA, Navy Over Poor Responses

Daredevil sea pirates
on Wednesday kidnapped two crew members on a trawler vessel at Dodo River in the Niger Delta region of Bayelsa State.
It was gathered that the 14 crew member trawler named, MV KULAK IX was attacked by armed sea pirates, while cargo onboard the vessel were not stolen but the Captain and Chief Engineer of the ship were reportedly abducted.
The Tide learnt that no ransom has been demanded by the captors from the owners of the trawler, a Lagos based company, Barnaly Fisheries Nigeria Limited.
A reliable source also gave the names of the abducted crew as Omodaji Awobu, Captain of the ship and Abukkudan Manikugan who is the Chief Engineer.
A merchant navy officials said that the trawler is currently aground in one of the creeks within the coast of Dodo River but added that the cargoes are still intact.
As at the time of filing this report plans were afoot to ensure that the ill-fated vessel remains afloat off the creek.
