Group Wants Military Camp In Etche
Worried by the
resurgence of cult activities in some communities in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, a special cultural oganisation, Okehi Clan Youth Front (OCYF), has advocated the establishment of army units to check the excesses of the groups in the area.
The Chairman of the OCYF, Deacon Amadi Samuel made this appeal while addressing journalists at Okehi at the weekend, after he led other members of the group to visit some communities affected by the activities of the hoodlums within the Okehi clan.
Deacon Amadi averred that the establishment of the military camp at Obibi Etche would help to address and end the cultism menace in the area.
According to him, the resurgence of the DeyGbam cult upsurge in Obibi Community has become a serious concern to the community and added that their operations had affected other neighbouring communities within the clan.
“These boys have gone wild in their criminal operations, they now go with sophisticated weapons. Houses and properties have been destroyed in these areas especially Obibi community. “Economic activities have been bought to a stop, people now live as refugees in their own land”, he stated.
The OCYF leader appealed to the leadership of the Nigeria Army in the state to as a matter of urgency approve the establishment of the camp, fight the increase rate of DeyGbam cultism at Obibi community adding that the soldiers approved should be permanently stationed at Obibi.
He stated that the presence of the military men in the affected Obibi Community would bring hope to the people and enable many indigenes of the area who fled the community to return.
Deacon Amadi urged the state government and the local government council in the area to assist the military in this direction to establish an army battalion in the area adding that security was the responsibility of every responsible government.
The Chairman used the medium to commend the security agencies in the area for their efforts in putting a hot chase on the cultists and urged them to be more proactive in their operations adding that residents and indigenes of Obibi community are facing harsh moment occasioned by the activities of the dreaded DeyGbam cult groups.
