Coach Festus Nwa of
Lagos State Wushu Kung-Fu Association on Friday urged the Nigeria Wushu Kung-Fu Federation to ensure the inclusion of the sport in the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) Games.
Nwa told newsmen in Lagos that NUGA was a good avenue that would further aid awareness and promotion of the sport in the country.
He said that the inclusion of the sport in NUGA would be a welcome development, especially for Wushu Kung-fu athletes in the tertiary institutions.
“Every sport, including Wushu Kung-fu should be introduced in NUGA Games and the athletes must also be given the opportunity to showcase their skills.
“We need to be at NUGA Games to showcase our skills in the two major events in Wushu Kung-fu which are Sanshuo and Taolu.
“This will further enhance the development of the sport and increase the competitions for our athletes,’’ he said.
Nwa described NUGA Games as a national tournament that brings athletes of various sports in the Nigeria universities together for competition and which also prepared them for other national and international tournaments.
According to him, the sport is already making progress in some primary and secondary schools.
He, however, added that its inclusion in NUGA Games would further project the sport and keep the athletes more alert.
“NUGA can also be compared with the National Sports Festival and the development of many sports today nationwide and worldwide can be traced to their inclusion in either the festival or NUGA Games, ’’ he said.
Nwa added that even after athletes had been identified and groomed from their primes, it was necessary to take advantage of national competitions like NUGA and the festival.
He said this would further keep such athletes in form and develop them to stardom.
