Army Chief Vows To Revive Sports

The Chief of Army
Staff, Lt.- Gen. Tukur Buratai on Saturday in Lagos reiterated his commitment to reviving intensive sporting activities in the Nigerian Army.
Buratai stated this at the maiden Lagos City Marathon, in which the Army fielded 17 personnel.
He said the Army was already in partnership with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria to facilitate the revival of Army sports.
Buratai said long distance races and other track and field events would be focal areas.
He expressed satisfaction with the participation of the Nigerian Army athletes at the maiden edition of the competition.
“More military personnel would be encouraged to participate in subsequent national and international sporting events,’’ he said.
Also, the Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Sports, Hon. Goni Lawal, commended the efforts of the organisers of the race.
He assured the state government and other stakeholders in the sector of the committee’s support to sustaining the sporting event.
The Tidesports reports that no fewer than 25,000 athletes within and outside the country participated in the marathon.
Tidesports further reports that a Kenyan long distance specialist, Abraham Kiptom won the race at 2 hours, 16 minutes and 20 seconds.
