Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), Solomon Edebiri has called for the revival of collegiate sports competition for tertiary institutions and secondary schools.
“This will facilitate speedy development of sports nationwide,’’ Edebiri told newsmen in Benin.
He enjoined sports administrators in the country to look at sports development holistically rather than concentrate only on aspects of it to the detriment of sports in general.
“I think government should revive and concentrate more on collegiate sports competitions.
“If this is done, it will help to develop our sports in general and football in particular because we will be able capture budding talents that abound in these areas.
“If you can remember, most of our sports heroes and heroines are products of the collegiate competitions.
“All that government needs to do, is to properly invest in sports and get officers to identify, monitor and groom talents through their career path,’’ he said.
According to him, it is good to start the year with a competition for the little children so that the much needed attention will be paid to the discovery of the gifted athletes.
