The Central Working
Committee (CWC) of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has kicked against the newly introduced electricity tariff as approved by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in the country.
Speaking to newsmen after the congress (CWC) meeting in Abuja recently, the NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba said the upward increment of 45% by NERC will further pauperise  the working class in the country.
Wabba said the increment in the electricity tariff is not justifiable  considering the realities of the economy and conditions of the working class in relationship to their purchasing power, stressing that the challenges facing the nation’s economy had slowed down businesses including the manufacturing sector.
He accused the DISCO companies of exploiting Nigerians through estimated selling system for the vast majority of Nigeria consumers while deliberately refusing to make prepaid metres available for Nigerians
The labour leader said that Nigerians should be allowed to pay for what they actually consume Wabba explained that the new electricity tariff is additional burden on the working class in the face of economic downturn and dwindling fortunes.
He said the NLC’s CWC comprising all the Presidents and General Secretaries of its affiliate unions had resolved during its emergency meeting held in Abuja on December 22, 2015 to reject the new electricity tariff increase and demand that pre-paid metres be made available to Nigerians.
The NLC boss said the congress and its industrial affiliates would soon in the new year mobilise against the new electricity tariff.
