Research Institute Proscribes Labour Unions

The industrial unions
operating in the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN), Ibadan, Oyo State, have been proscribed by the authorities of the research institute.
Speaking to newsmen in Ibadan recently, the General Secretary, Senior Staff Association of University Teaching Hospitals Research Institutes and Associated Institutions. (SSAUTHRIAI), Comrade Moshood Akinade urged the Federal Government to call the Research Institute Authorities to order to respect the rights of the workers to freely belong to union of their choice in accordance with extant labour law of the country.
Akinade said the Research Institute has proscribed the three industrial unions operating in the institute which include Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions (ASURI) and SSAUTHRIAI.
He said the institute authorities has continued to intimidate, harass and denied the workers of their rights of union membership unabated.
The union scribe called upon the federal government to look into the crisis rocking the institute, especially the alleged termination of 91 workers appointment and their illegal ejection from their residences with armed men by the Research Institute authorities.
He said the Research Institute must allow the workers participate and belong to unions without any hindrance.
Akinade appealed to all members of the industrial unions proscribed by the authorities of the Cocoa Research Institute to remain calm as the national secretariats of the respective unions have taken up the issues with the appropriate authorities to allow the industrial unions operate.
