NDLEA Arrests 289 Drug Suspects In Anambra
The National Drug Law
Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Anambra State says it arrested 289 drug suspects in 2015 as against the 395 in 2014.
The state Commander of the agency, Mr Sule Momodu, made the disclosure at a news conference in Awka recently.
He said that the decrease in the number of arrests in 2015 was an indication that the command was winning the drug war in the state.
Momodu said that 458.622kg drug was seized during the period as against 704.689kg in 2014.
According to him, the figure shows the command has the capacity and capability of stopping the influx of drugs into the state.
He said the drugs comprised of 455.144kg of cannabis sativa, 196.6grms of cocaine, 156.9grms of heroin and 3.125kg psychotropic as against 704.278kg cannabis, 117.3grms cocaine, 16.6grms heroin and 117.2grms psychotropic in 2014.
Momodu also said that the command recorded 30 convictions in 2015 as against 29 in 2014.
“The agency executed 82 operations from 148 approved surveillances in 2015 as against 73 executed operations from 125 approved surveillances in 2014,’’ he said.
The commander said that the agency also rehabilitated 55 males and one female in 2015, adding that they had been re-united with their families as against 39 males in 2014.
He also said that 124.3kg cannabis sativa was seized from two suspects with an Avalon XLS car on January 9 at Okija in Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.
Momodu said that another suspect was also arrested on January 9 at Inland Town, Onitsha, with 1.790kg cannabis sativa.
He, however, appealed to Governor Willie Obiano to construct the modern rehabilitation centre which he had given approval to.
Momodu also appealed for logistic support from the state government, particularly in the provision of vehicles and motorcycles.
The commander further called for the support and cooperation of the public to help reduce drug use in the state.
“The fight against drug use is the beginning of the fight against criminality. Let us join hands together to fight the drug scourge in the state.
“The command will not rest until the mandate is fully achieved,’’ he said.
