The former Secre
tary of the Community Development Committee (CDC) in Ebocha Community in the Ogba Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, Elder Dandy Mgbewa, says the community is yet to recover from the effect of the Agip gas explosion recently in the area.
Speaking at a stakeholders meeting organised by the Centre for Environment Human Rights and Development (CEHRD) in Port Harcourt, said that the community has lost its sources of drinking water to the explosion.
He also alleged that some houses in the community were falling following the explosion.
He alleged that some members of the community had suffered various levels of incarceration on the allegations that they were responsible for the explosion.
Elder Mgbwa urged for the intervention for the Rivers State Government to compel the management of Nigerian Agip Oil Company to respect the fundamental rights of the community by not engaging in further arrests and intimidations of the people.
He also urged for the restoration of drinking water for the community, while those lost their houses on to the explosion be rehabilitated and compensated to enable them rebuild their houses.
The community former CDC secretary used the occasion to commend CEHRD for the meeting and urged other organisations to come to the aide of the community.
Efforts to reach Nigerian Agip Oil Company for comment on the matter proved abortive as the security personals at the company’s gate prevented the reporter from gaining entrance into the company’s premises.
