Cleric Blames Youth Restiveness On Bad Leadership
A cleric, Archbishop
Emmanuel Chukwuma, has attributed youth restiveness in parts of the country to “frustration’’ occasioned by the failure of leaders to meet their aspirations.
Chukwuma, who is the Archbishop of the Anglican Arch-Diocese of Enugu, made this known in an interview with newsmen recently in Enugu.
The cleric was speaking against the backdrop of protests in seven states of the South-East and South-South zones of the country by youths aged between 20 and 30 years old seeking the creation of Biafra as a country.
He said that the lack of employment opportunities, hunger, and general economic hardship even in the midst of plenty helped advance the agitation by the youths.
“You see hunger brings anger; and a hungry man, it is said, is an angry man.
“That’s why you find so many of these children protesting and asking for Biafra.
“It is not that they are looking for Biafra; they are not asking for it, it is because they are frustrated.
“They are agitating for recognition of their lives and talents in the governance of Nigeria.
“And until we recognise this, and allow the resources of this nation to flow to the people, we are deceiving ourselves, because right now, many of our people in governance are self-centred and materialistic and are not thinking of the interests of the people in their constituencies.
“They have so much in their hands, imagine somebody talking about millions, billions in their hands; and this is not right while Nigerians are suffering.’’
Chukwuma urged government at all levels to restore the confidence reposed in them by keeping their campaign promises and implementing people-oriented programmes.
