Bouyant Economy: Group Prescribes Geometric Power Plant

A pan-Igbo pressure
group, the Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF), has called for the inauguration of the Geometric Power Plant in Aba, Abia to boost economic activities in the South East.
The President of ADF, Prof. Uzodinma Nwala, told newsmen in Enugu  that the non-commissioning of the project was the bane of economic activities in the zone in recent times.
Nwala noted that the frustration in commissioning the project two years after its completion was impeding the economic and commercial drive of the people.
“We bemoan the ugly treatment of Geometric Power Plant which is the first private-public partnership power project in Nigeria designed to solve the problem of power supply in Aba and the generality of the South East.
“The project is yet to be commissioned in spite of its completion more than two years ago,’’ he said.
The president said that the situation had frustrated the potentials of the commercial city which he described as one of the most thriving and dynamic economic cities in West Africa.
“Every patriotic person understands the great potential this project has for the rebirth and development of the South East and the rest of Nigeria and West Africa.
“Alaigbo Development Foundation demands that all road blocks frustrating the take-off of the Geometric Power Project should be dismantled for the overriding economic and social benefits that will accrue to the zone,’’ he said.
Nwala appealed to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) for its co-operation for the take off of the project.
The Aba-based 141 megawatts gas-fired power plant, also known as Aba Independent Power Project, was meant to supply electricity to the Aba industrial cluster, Nnewi and Enugu.
It has a 27-kilometre gas pipeline and a distribution utility within a ring-fenced distribution network.
