The President, Rivers
Drivers Transport Cooperative Union Limited, Comrade Binoye Sunday, has called on the government to urgently check-mate the activities of touts in some local government areas of the state.
Sunday, who made the call while speaking with The Tide correspondent in Port Harcourt on Monday said the call became necessary as the touts publicly posed as local government council officials to extort money, engage in physical combat with drivers, impound their vehicles and most times inflict physical injuries on the innocent and law abiding motorists especially commercial drivers plying the areas as well as tricycle operators.
According to him, the most volatile areas where these motor touts operate were at Rumuolumeni, Wimpey Junctiion Rumuokuta, Rumueme, Rumuokoro in Obio/Akpor local government area as well as within Oyigbo local government areas.
He disclosed that these hoodlums carry out their nefarious activities with impunity as outlaws, with authorities of the local government areas allegedly aiding and abetting them, stressing that Rivers State Government should set up a taskforce to apprehend them and ensure sanity and safety of the motoring public.
He wondered how such illegal activities were being perfected without the local government backing them, and also called for a thorough investigation and apprehend these culprits  in order to serve as deterrent to others, and for peace to reign between the motoring public and the alleged sponsors of the touts.
The stakeholders used the forum to commend the Governor, Chief (Barr.) Nyesom Wike for his numerous road projects in the state, pointing out that within his seven months in office, Rivers State had been transformed and given a face-lift, wishing him God’s guidance and courage to keep the flag flying.
Sunday said members of the union have given him kudos and vote of confidence that before the end of his tenure, the state would attain its Garden City status.
