NECA Wants FG To Sustain Auto Policy

The Federal
Government has been urged not to scrap the National Automotive Policy (NAP) as being touted by some stakeholders in the industry.
The Director-General of Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA), Mr Olusegun Oshinowo said this in a statement made available to journalists in Lagos recently.
Oshinowo said government inconsistent policies have been the bane of Nigeria’s development as a nation,  pointing out that the policy surrounding vehicles assembling  in the country is no exception, and cautioned the Federal Government against suspending NAP.
According to him, present administration under General Muhammadu Buhari should sustain the automotive policy as it would help discourage the importation of used vehicles otherwise known as ‘Tokumbo Cars’.
“One developmental challenge of Nigeria and major hindrance to sustainable national growth had been successive governments’ policy inconsistency and programmes somersault.
“The time has come for succeeding governments to put the economic interest of the country ahead of political consideration”, he noted, pointing out that government should imbibe policies of past governments as the automotive policy is one of such that needed to be sustained.
Oshinowo called on the president  to ignore the clamour to lower import tariff on automobile products as such would have negative impact on the policy and the economy of the nation.
