Integrity Group Drags AGF, IGP To Court …Demands N500m Compensation
A Federal High Court
in Port Harcourt in Rivers State presided over by Justice, Uche N. Agomoh, has fixed January 27th 2016 to hear an application of service in a suit brought before her by the Director of Integrity Group, Mr. Livingstone Wechie against the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Inspector General of Police over an infringement on his fundamental rights by the Nigerian police.
The matter which was originally scheduled for hearing on Monday 21st December 2015 could not be heard due to the on-going Christmas Vacation embarked upon by judges in various courts across the federation. The case was later adjourned to 27th January, 2016 for the application to be heard.
Mr. Livingstone Wechie through his counsel, Barr. Eugene Odey is seeking among other things the sum of N500 million from the Attorney-General of the federation and the Inspector General of police as damages suffered in the hands of the policemen who brutalized him and infringed on his fundamental human rights.
Speaking to Journalists shortly after the case was adjourned, counsel to the plaintiff, Barr. Eugene Odey, said they were in court to move a motion for an application of service to be served on the AGF and IGP on the case adding that his client was demanding from the first and second defendants in the suit the sum of N500 million for abuse of his fundamental human rights.
According to him, the suit would serve as a deterrent to men of the Nigeria police and other security agencies in the country with regards to abuse of people’s fundamental rights adding that the security agencies have gone beyond their rules of engagement.
He expressed optimism that his client would have justice at the end of the trial, even as he said he believed in the judiciary commitment in upholding justice in the society especially as it affects the common people.
It would be recalled that Mr. Livingstone Wechie the spokesperson of the Integrity Group in the state on 12th of November, 2015 at about 9pm was allegedly manhandled and beaten up by policemen on duty at Agip/Mgbuosimini road, close to Agip Company gate.
