Banigo Decries Violence Against Women
Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr.Mrs. Ipalibo Harry Banigo has called for greater co-operation towards tackling the problem of violence against women in the State.
Dr. Banigo in a statement signed by her Press Secretary, Paul Damgbor said cases of violence against women have been on the increase in the State, country and the world at large.
The Deputy Governor called on stakeholders to proffer solutions to the problem of domestic violence in the State, noting that it remains unsettled reality that women all over the world face higher risk of violence than men.
She lamented that about 60 million people forcibly displaced are women and many who flee war torn areas are often exploited by unscrupulous persons.
She stressed that past efforts made to raise awareness on the violence that many women suffer daily, have not yielded the desired result.
Reflecting on the theme of this year’s International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women, Dr. Banigo said the theme “From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Make Education Safe for All,” calls for sober reflection and adequate information through sensitisation and campaigns to help reduce cases of domestic violence among women.
Dr, Banigo said verbal violence against women or the use of abusive languages against women, like calling women prostitute must be checked, stressing that the prevalence of mental illness among women will be reduced by 50 per cent if domestic violence is reduced.
The Deputy Governor said it is sad to note that one in every three women worldwide has experienced physical or sexual violence, mostly by intimate partners while about 120 million Girls have been forced into intercourse or other sexual acts.
She urged women to always report cases of violence against them by violators to be brought to book, and called for laws on violence against women to be reviewed and implemented while those responsible for implementing the law should carry out whatever penalty the convict deserves.
She suggested more stringent and pragmatic approach to curb and discourage violence against women in the homes.
