Association Tasks Govt On Fish Export
The President, Ufuoma
United Fish Farmers Association, (UUFFA), Delta State Chapter, Mr. Fischer Ogwugwu has called on the state government to support the association in its drive to export fish.
In a statement obtained from Agronigeria by The Tide recently in Asaba the state capital, Ogwugwu pleaded with the government to make the association’s wish a reality.
According to the UUFFA boss, they have the dream of making exportation of fish a reality but was bugged by lack of funds.
He explained that the association had a membership strength of more than 1000.
Explaining further, he revealed that the fish farmers association had the largest cat fish farm in the West African sub-region which is located at Ekpan, Uwvie Local Government Area of the state.
The statement added that more than 10 tons of fish were produced on daily basis all the year round.
Apart from requesting support from the government, the association’s president also called on banks, willing partners and non-governmental organisations to help it break into the international markets.
According to him, the association has the challenge of a possible fish glut and less buyers .
“We produce so much fish but we do not have buyers, so if we can process and package the fish and export, then every member of the association will be better off,” he said.
He raised the alarm that local market women had taken undue advantage of the excess supply to the extent that they most times determine the prices of fish.
“So we want to break into the international market to earn foreign exchange and expand our businesses,” he said.
