Hepatitis, A Slow Killer -Medical Expert
A medical practitioner, Dr Igeniwari Coxson has described Hepatitis (an inflammation of the liver) as a slow killer.
Speaking during a chat with The Tide shortly after an immunization session at the Hilson Medicals, Port Harcourt, last Thursday, Coxson compared Hepatitis to the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) stating however, that it was even more dangerous than the deadly disease, AIDS.
Coxson who revealed that hepatitis could be contacted through viral or chemical infections in the body fluid and can be transmitted through sexual intercourse, blood transfusion or use of sterilised needle or slades said it destroys the liver and reduces its detoxifying functions which makes the body more prone to harmful substances.
“Hepatitis is more dangerous than AIDS because it kills the carrier slowly and cannot be detected except is particularly diagnosed. Hepatitis is mostly detected in the blood banks during screening of donor’s blood samples before transfusion is made” Coxson said.
The Medical expert noted that hepatitis has five categories; A,B,C,E and H stating that regular fever, headache, body ache and yellowness of the eyes were the symptoms of the disease.
As ways of preventing the disease, coxson stressed the need for personal and public hygiene including washing of hands and fruits before rating, avoiding contaminated blood among others.
While noting that there were vaccines for the treatment of the disease, coxson said however, that they were expensive and called for the collaboration of government and stakeholders to make the cost affordable for every Nigerian.
