NCC Clears Air On GSM Masts, Tower
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has said that GSM masts and towers do not possess features that could cause cancer as speculated.
The Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau of the NCC, Mrs Maryam Bayi said this at the 77th edition of a consumer outreach Tuesday in Kano.
The Tide source gathered from Bayi that it has been scientifically proven that both towers and masts are not harmful as speculated.
She said the information became necessary in an attempt to disabuse peoples mind over the issue which she said has deeply settled in the peoples mind.
According to her, research conducted by World Health Organisation (WHO) and other technical research institutes are yet to give a negative answer.
She noted that all telecom equipment coming to Nigeria are being type-approved by the agency, with a view to ensuring compliance with global standards on health and safety.
Concerning other challenges facing subscribers in the country, she said Mobile Number Portability (MNP) was introduced to handle some of such issues.
The NCC boss explained that the service was initiated to enable subscribers port to other networks of their choice without losing their original number.
According to her, the commission was still working on the project to ensure that it succeeds.
The Tide learnt that the likely dis-advantage of the telecom masts and towers was attracting airplanes during war time in a bid to damage the telecom system of an enemy country.
