A Port Harcourt
based lawyer, Barr. Abraham Jande, has told the police to respect the rule of law.
Barr. Jande, who stated this while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt at the weekend noted that the police across the country hardly respect the rule of law.
He said most times the police employ self-help to solve problems instead of respecting the rule of law.
Barr. Jande described the “bail is free” written boldly in most police stations as a blatant falsehood and expressed regrets that no  Inspector General of Police had been able to tackle the problem.
The Port Harcourt basd lawyer said that despite the Inspector General, Solomon Arase’s warning that the police should not involve in civil matters, they have continued to do so with impunity.
He also explained that the police were not over bothered about charging suspects to court within the constitutionally recommended time because nobody cared to bringing them to book.
Barr. Jande said that sometimes the police detained suspects for months without charging them to court.
According to him, “the practice has gained notoriety in police stations. I once witnessed when the police were torturing a suspect with the aim of making him confess in spite of the law against torture”.
“In the new Nigeria, which President Mohammadu Buhari is trying to salvage, the rule of law must be in the fore while self-help is abandoned.
