A member Board of
Trustees of Independent Grassroots Sports Development Association, IGSDA, Mr. Sampson Abiala, has called for official  recognition especially, from Rivers State Government, to be accorded  members of the IGSDA under – 19  football team that won the  recent football event of the United Nation’s  Day of Friendship competition in Ghana.
Mr. Abiala speaking to newsmen after IGSDA organised a mini reception for the players after their  return to Port Harcourt last week said that the grassroots team was the first to win laurel and bring  honour to Rivers State under  Chief Nyesom Wike’s administration. He noted that it would be proper and a positive development if the government  could organise a reception for IGSDA and  the team.
According to him, the Governor as a grassroots person with interest in grassroots sports development can only be motivating more youths to success if the players  are given due recognition.
“Government’s reception or recognition of the players will go a long way to encourage the players and galvanise  many young people to explore and express their talent in sports, with the knowledge  that their efforts  would not go unrecognised or unappreciated”, said Abiala.
He also believes that such government recognition will help to take grassroots sports to greater heights and harness the inner potential for engagement of youths in civic and productive energy.
Also speaking, the founder and President of IGSDA, Prince Miebi Ogunu said that the association was committed to its vision of taking sports and talent development to the grassroots, unearthing sports men and women at very  young age and exposing them to opportunities. He hopes  that the association would soon be given the opportunity to partner the state in talent discovery and development.
