UNN Marks International Youth Day
Students of the Univer
sity of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), at the Enugu campus of the institution joined other young people across the world to celebrate the International Youth Day.
At the event, the Associate Dean, Student Affairs, Mrs Edith Nwosu, described the ceremony as a watershed in the life of students on the campus.
Nwosu said that UNN had made history as the first university in the country to get its students together for the celebration since it began.
She said that the UN General Assembly on December 17, 1999 set aside August 12 to remember the youth in response to recommendations made to it.
She said the 2015 celebration was aimed at promoting a multi- dimensional approach to the fusion of young people in public decision making.
Nwosu said that youths had the potential for community development but expressed regret that enough space had not been created for them to participate in decision making.
“We need to create the platform and encourage them to participate in political processes and decision making, especially in matters that concern them,” she said.
The dean said that in its resolve to impact positive leadership traits in students, the institution decided to mark the day against all odds.
“We want to release to the world socially responsible graduates who will make positive difference and you are part of that vanguard.
“We need you to help government at various levels to achieve sustainable development in the country,” Nwosu said.
The Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Eddie Nwobodo, commended the institution for observing the event and bringing the students together to further inculcate in them positive traits.
Nwobodo appealed to the students to embrace habits that would make them realise their potential in life.
