The Senate yesterday confirmed the Service Chiefs appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari, with a charge by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki to them to swiftly end the scourge of Boko Haram insurgency ravaging the North East and the debilitating menace of crude oil theft undermining the revenue base of the nation.
The Senate made the confirmation shortly after screening of the newly appointed service chiefs behind closed doors.
The screening earlier slated for last week Thursday, was postponed to yesterday, due to the pulling out parade programme organised by the military in honour of the former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal, Alex Badeh, which took place in Abuja last Thursday.
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, had announced last Wednesday that the newly appointed service chiefs would be screened during plenary last Thursday by 11:00am.
Saraki had read President Muhammadu Buhari’s letter seeking the confirmation of the upper chamber for the appointment of new service chiefs, during plenary.
He had said that the letter to confirm the appointments was in accordance with the provisions of Section18 (1) of the Armed Forces Act, 2004.
Buhari on July 13, announced the appointment of Major General Abayomi Olonishakin, Chief of Defence Staff; Major General Tukur Buratai, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, Chief of Naval Staff; Air Vice-Marshal Sadique Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff; and Air Vice-Marchal Monday Morgan as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
The president also appointed retired Major General Babagana Monguno as National Security Adviser.
