Pharmacists Urge Equal Treatment Of Health Workers
The National Chairman of
the Nigerian Association of Hospital and Administrative Pharmacists, Mr Martins Oyewole, has called for the evaluation of health workers on equal basis.
Speaking with newsmen during the association’s 17th Annual Scientific Conference in Lokoja at the weekend, Oyewole noted that the disparity in the wages of health workers was abnormal, maintaining that such equal treatment would curtail the incessant strikes in the sector.
Oyewole who reiterated the need for equality to enhance teamworlk in effective healthcare delivery.
He canvassed for equity in the way and manner wages were fixed to prevent unnecessary bad blood and acrimony.
The official also called for the allocation of more resources to the healthcare industry, noting that such attention would aid the quest for more research to keep professionals abreast with modern developments.
He expressed pharmacists’ readiness to consistently be at work rather than on strike, pointing out that such strikes were not beneficial to anyone, especially the pharmacists whose practical experiences were being affected.
On the tussle between doctors and the other health workers, Oyewole described it as an unfortunate development that should not be encouraged.
“The tussle is unnecessary, but the healthcare industry in Nigeria is about the worst in the world when it comes to justice and equity in remuneration.
“You find a situation where somebody who is being employed is dictating the amount he should earn while placing a ceiling on the remuneration for other colleagues.
“We feel that such is very wrong; it is the employer that should fix the remuneration so that the wages will be fair to all,” he said.
Oyewole further claimed that a large chunk of the remuneration in the health sector was being consumed by medical doctors, stressing that such had often affected the morale of other players in the sector.
