The Rivers State Po
lice Command has dragged the ex-police sergeant who allegedly  shot and killed a commercial bus driver, late David Legbara, to court.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Chris Ezike made this disclosure during a recent press briefing held at the police headquarters at Moscow, Road in Port Harcourt.
It would be recalled that on Friday, 7th August, 2015 a former police sergeant shot one David Legbara for allegedly refusing to part with a bribe of N100.00. The death of driver triggered the spontaneous protest by bus drivers as well as sympathetic members of the public.
CP Ezike stated that the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase condemned the act and ordered that a full scale investigation be launched into the matter.
According to the CP, the outcome of the investigation indicted the police officer for allegedly using his fire arms against the provisions of Force Order 237, adding that he had also been tried in departmental orderly room, and found guilty for offences against discipline to wit: use of fire arms and discreditable conduct.
CP Ezike further told journalists that the killer police sergeant had since been sacked from the force, which according to him, paved way for his arraignment in court to enable justice take its full course.
The state police boss stated that the force had taken actions pursuant to ensuring that justice was served, adding that they were aware that those actions taken by the force may not be enough to bring back the dead person rather it would serve as a deterrent in the force.
He opined that the command would continue to be in touch with the family of the deceased driver, even as he lauded the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) members over their maturity during their moment of the grief as well as other stakeholders who helped calm the situation.
