Media Women Seek Govt’s Support On Capacity Building

practice in Rivers State, under the aegis of Nigeria Association of Women journalists, Rivers State chapter, have solicited the support of the state government towards their career enhancement.
Chairman of the association, Mrs. Lilian Okonkwo, had requested for periodic training and capacity building of her members especially those in government-owned media houses such as the Rivers State Newspaper Corporation, (The Tide), Rivers State Television (RSTV), Rivers State Broadcasting Corporation (RSBC), Ministry of Information, Garden City Radio as well as those in the privately-owned media, stating that the trainings if carried out will help equip women journalists in the state and make them better communicators during campaigns and sensitisation programmes with a view to correcting ills in the society.
Mrs. Okonkwo made the request, Tuesday, at the Government House, Port Harcourt, when members of her association paid a courtesy visit on the Deputy Governor of the state, Dr (Mrs.) Ipalibo Harry.
Intimating the host on the activities of her association, the leader of the group highlighted tasks such as sensitisation programmes, partnership initiatives advocacy programmes among others, as what the association is known for and is willing to do more.
She pointed out that in carrying out these responsibilities and obligations to the public, the association is faced with transportation challenge hence, she also appeals to the government to assist with the provision of a fourteen-seater bus to ease the association’s movement in carrying out programmes.
Responding, the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Ipalibo Harry, assured the female journalists of government’s support towards the training and retraining of its workforce stating that it is already in the blue print of the PDP-led administration in Rivers State to place a high premium on training and retraining of workers.
She therefore, charged the delegation to champion campaigns against violence on women and other obnoxious practices in the state.
