Man, 25, Remanded Over Rape

A 25-year-old
man, Chigozie Onwumere and  resident of No 75 Afam Road, Oyigbo in Oyigbo Local Government  Area of Rivers State, has been remanded in prison custody for raping a 21  year- old girl.
The accused is standing trial on a one court charge bordering on rape and defilement with Charge Sheet No PMC/582 c/2015 before Chief Magistrate I.O Agbesor.
The Police Prosecutor told the court that the accused person, Chigozie Onwumere on the 9th  of July, 2015 at No 75 Afam Road, Oyigbo in the Port Harcourt Magisterial District, did have unlawful carnal knowledge of one Deborah Sunday female aged 21 1/2 years old.
He averred that the accused committed an offence punishable under section 218 of the criminal code, Cap 37 Vol. 11, laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999.
The police prosecutor urged the court to refuse the bail application of the accused as been sought by his counsel, adding that the accused was not entitled to bail and will jump bail because of the humus nature of the crime he committed.
In his ruling, the presiding Chief Magistrate Court 5, I.O. Agbesor refused the bail application of the accused and ordered that he be remanded in prison custody while his case file be remitted to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice on the matter.
