Court Convicts 33 Traffic Offenders
The Federal Road Safety
Commission (FRSC) in Enugu has convicted 33 traffic offenders during the sitting of its mobile court in Enugu.
The Corps Legal Officer, Mr C. Ido, said that the offenders were arrested for various traffic offences during the commission’s special patrol at Ninth-Mile Corner.
“During the session, four drivers were arraigned for driving with fake license, 12 tried for driving without driving licenses while six were without fire extinguishers in their vehicles.
“Five persons were tried for driving without seat belt while three commercial bus drivers were arraigned for carrying passengers without passengers’ manifests.
“Three offenders were also arraigned because of their inabilities to provide the caution signs for their vehicles.
“All the offenders pleaded guilty to the charges and asked for leniency,” he said.
Ido said that every traffic offender must appear before the court with his or her genuine driver’s license as it was an offence for any motorist to drive with fake vehicle documents.
He said that drivers who forged their licenses were fined between N10,000 and N20,000 or a jail term of between six months and one year.
The officer said that other offences attracted fines of between N2,000 and N5,000 or one month imprisonment.
“Ignorance of the law is not an excuse so any offender who cannot pay his or her fine should get ready to serve the prison term.
“The offender’s vehicle will remain in the FRSC custody until he or she finishes his/her jail term or whenever he/she pays the fine.
“The vehicle in FRSC custody will attract N200 daily and the owner in our custody must pay up whatever amount is accumulated by the vehicles while in custody before taking the vehicle,” he said.
