The Akwa Ibom State
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr Glory Edet, has urged women to cultivate self-discipline to command the respect of people around them.
Edet gave the advice at a meeting with the state executive of the National Council of Women’s Societies (NCWS) in Uyo on Wednesday.
‘’As wives and mothers, it is your duty to maintain discipline to be able to instill same in your children, the nation’s future leaders.
‘’The ministry is ready to continue to partner with you in the task of ensuring that the affairs of women are taken proper care of in the state, as well as carry the women along in all of the ministry’s programmes,’’ she said.
Describing Gov. Udom Emmanuel as a leader with passion for the success of women, Edet charged the council to give him and his wife, Mrs. Martha Emmanuel, who is their patroness, their maximum support.
While encouraging them to work harder to add value to their organisation in particular and all women in general, the commissioner urged them to eschew rancour and frowned at factions springing up in the council.
She maintained that for unity, love and togetherness to reign, they should endeavour to be transparent, always rendering periodic financial accounts to the general house and ensuring that no official usurped the constitutional functions of others.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Cecilia Inyang, acknowledged that as humans, everybody was prone to one weakness or the other. Inyang said that with sheer determination, one could overcome one’s weaknesses.
‘’ I urge you as women leaders to pray for God’s wisdom and direction on how to go about leading and advising the womenfolk,’’ she said.
Speaking earlier, the NCWS State President, Mrs. Menyene Nkwo, pledged the council’s total support and unflinching loyalty to the state government.
She congratulated the commissioner on her reappointment and subsequent deployment to the ministry.
