The Catfish Farmers As
sociation (CFFAN), Sango Ota, Ogun State, has trained 100 farmers in Abakaliki to provide alternative lucrative jobs for pensioners and youths in Ebonyi.
The National Public Relations Officer, CFFAN and Director, Flourishing Centre, Fish Farm, Ogun, Mr Sunday Onoja, said the workshop was aimed at providing less tedious but lucrative means of income.
Onoja said at a one-day workshop organised for civil servants, pensioners, youths and general public to avoid over dependence on pension and salary.
According to him, a small scale cat fish farming can begin with small amount, little space, time and would grow from time to time.
“CFFAN is organising this workshop in a bid to prolong the life span of pensioners and others; we engage in training youths to boost the internally generated revenue of a state.
“Enlightening the public and getting it the right way is very important to us in this workshop because we want the best for them and about 100 are participating.’
He stressed that the workshop was aimed at correcting wrongs or fallacies being spread by charlatans that fish farming was not lucrative.
“I advise those who describe fish farming as non profiting to try and start with any amount they can afford; don’t borrow to start,’’ Onoja said.
A participant, pensioner and fish farmer,  Mr John Nwele said the workshop had availed him the opportunity to learn new techniques to improve on the business.
“I have more knowledge and techniques now to apply; this is an opportunity to boost my productivity.
“I retired from Local Government Service Commission as Deputy Director, Finance; now I am a pensioner and I am proud to be an employer of labour,” Nwele said.
Another participant, Mr Ben Ukpai,  noted that the programme had created more methods for expansion.
“I have learnt more techniques and methods of fish farming now from this workshop and this will help me to enhance productivity.
“I am proud to be an employer of five workers in my fish farm and still make more profit which my pension money cannot pay,” Ukpai noted.
