Air Pollution: Expert Seeks Restriction Of Generators

An environmentalist, Mr
Victor Imevbore, has called on the three tiers of governments to restrict the use of power generating sets to reduce air pollution.
Imevbore, who is the Managing Director of Environmental Resources Managers Ltd., made this known in an interview with newsmen recently in Lagos.
He said indiscriminate use of generating sets was a major source of air pollution.
“Because of erratic power supply what we have is each person buying a generating set and puts it on at the same time when there is no light.
“You see this in every house where each tenant has a generating set and in the markets and shopping malls, among others.
“This habit is not only causing pollution of air, it is also the result of noise pollution everywhere.
“The fume from these generating sets is injurious to health as well as the cause of many serious ailments prevalent in various hospitals these days,’’ he said.
Imevbore admitted that people needed power to engage in various activities.
He, however, said that generating sets should be used in a way that would benefit even the person that spent his money buying the generating set.
According to him, nobody will intentionally go to the market to buy death with his money that is exactly what Nigerians are doing.
Imevbore said, “apart from the risk of handling and storing fuel carelessly, what of the danger of the generating sets exploding out of careless use.
“We have situation where children are told to go and pour fuel inside the generating sets and puts it on without considering the danger.’’
He said that it was high time the three tiers of governments check how people use generating sets.
According to him, it is a fact that it will take time for power supply to be regular.
He said that the government should have a policy encouraging communal acquisition of generating sets to reduce air pollution.
He said that people should be encouraged to stop buying individual generating sets.
Imevbore said that resident associations were doing well in ensuring security, peace and orderliness in their various communities.
He said that the associations should be encouraged to do more in area of generating set to check air pollution.
