Five autonomous com
munities in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, have donated 680 hectares of land to the state government.
The communities made the donation to support the proposed agriculture reform programme of the government.
The leaders and representatives of the communities led by Mr Albert Edoga announced the donation recently in Enugu during a courtesy call on Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
Edoga said the communities willingly decided to answer the clarion call by the government for residents to partner it in its proposed reforms in the sector.
He appealed to the government to take advantage of the numerous cash crops in the local government area to shore up its revenue.
“We have decided to engage government constructively in a mutually beneficial venture and we want government to use this opportunity to harness the cash crops that abound in the area,” he said.
He said the piece of land was strategically located and surrounded by five different streams which would encourage irrigation for all year farming.
Edoga said the land was given out free without any conditions attached, but appealed to government to engage their people in harnessing the economic crops in the area.
Responding, Ugwuanyi said that by the donation, he was convinced that the state was better positioned to explore the potential inherent in the agriculture sector.
“What you have done speaks volume of your people for it has pleased you to willingly donate this piece of land surrounded by natural endowments to government for the development of this all important sector.
‘We are now better positioned to take agriculture to the next level of development,” Ugwuanyi said.
Our correspondent learnt that the five autonomous communities are Ohom Orba, Agu Orba, Imilike Etiti, Imilike Agu and Ezimo.
