20 Baseball Players For MLB Tryout
Twenty baseball players
are currently participating in the 2016 Major League Baseball (MLB) tryout in Abuja, according to the Nigeria Baseball and Softball Association.
The Secretary of the association, Kehinde Laniyan, told newsmen in a telephone interview on Saturday that the tryout was organised annually by the MLB to select players for elite camp in South Africa.
Laniyan said the programme had served as a platform for young players to launch their careers.
He said the players were within ages 14 to 16 years.
“A total of 20 players were invited to the tryout unlike 2014 when we had 50 players.
“We believe that some of the invited players will perform well and make it to the elite camp later in the year.’’
He said the current tryout was supervised by Mike Randall, a South African-based MLB Consultant and assisted by Yinka Adewusi who is also a consultant to the MLB.
The scribe commended the MLB for its continuous support to the development of baseball in Africa.
The programme was initiated by the MLB to give aspiring baseballers an opportunity to ply their trades in foreign leagues.
