Wike Pledges Support To Police In Crime-Fighting …Receives New Rivers CP
The Rivers State Governor Chief Nyesom Wike, has assured the new state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike, of government full support in the fight against traffic congestion and crime including kidnapping, armed robbery and cultism in the state.
The governor, who gave the assurance while receiving Ezeike in Government House, Port Harcourt, commended the CP for proactively assessing and identifying the challenges of traffic congestion, kidnapping, armed robbery and cultism to the development of the state.
He lauded Ezike’s “Operation Keep Moving” to ease traffic jams and the one month “Crime Emergency Campaign” to fight crime, saying that they will give the people of Rivers State very high hopes. Some of the things that happened a few months ago will be a thing of the past.”
Concerning traffic jams in the state, the governor charged the new CP, to deploy a team to check the activities of commercial bus and taxi drivers who usually block the roads and create traffic jams, but warned that the team should not extort members of the public.
With regards to cultism, Wike told Ezeike “to punish anybody caught for any cult-related crime irrespective of who is related to. There should be no sacred cows in dealing with the cultists”.
In relation to kidnapping, the governor informed the CP that an amendment to is behind him or her,” stressing that the current kidnapping law was already being treated by the state House Assembly and would be finalized in due course.
He said kidnappers would be punished and the ill-gotten wealth and properties will be confiscated and destroyed, once the new law becomes operational.
The governor said “I believe there cannot be governance without security. Security is one priority we must focus on. We will do the best we can to encourage investors to return to Rivers State.”
He further said “I will give you the total support to see that crime is reduced to the barest minimum in Rivers State”.
Responding, the new Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike commended Governor Wike on his “security-friendly disposition,” and promised to do his best.
