The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has expressed satisfaction with the progress of work on the Eleme axis of the East-West Road currently under rehabilitation.
The project is a joint effort of companies operating in the area and the Rivers State Government.
Wike had inspected work on the road, Sunday afternoon together with the chief executive of the construction firm, Reynold Construction Company (RCC), and expressed hope that the rehabilitation would be completed as scheduled.
The state chief executive also visited the ongoing Nkpogu Bridge, Garrison-Slaughter-Woji-Elelenwo-East-West Road rehabilitation and expansion sites.
He noted that the Nkpogu Bridge was abandoned by the contractor due to non-payment by the previous administration, saying that the contract sum has been fully paid by government to ensure that the contractor finished the project.
“The road was awarded by the last administration, and abandoned by the contractor due to lack of payment by the previous administration. When we came on board, I called the contractor, and he complained about the amount he was being owed. So, we have paid completely, and you can see work is on-going”, he stated.
At the Garrison-Slaughter-Woji-Elelenwo-East-West Road, Wike described the road as key and strategic to the state, and expressed happiness with the level of work so far done by the contractor, noting that government has agreed to pay the contractor the money owed by the previous administration.
“This project is key and strategic to the state. The project was slowed down by the contractor due to poor finance. We have discussed with them, and mapped out the way we are going to pay”,  Wike noted.
He also expressed optimism that the contractor would complete the five-kilometer road from Garrison to Slaughter, excluding the major flyover, within the stipulated period as promised.
