Para-Athletics Federation Invites 40 For Camping
The Para-Athletics Federa
tion of Nigeria (PFN) invited no fewer than 40 athletes for closed camping, ahead of the 11th All Africa Games.
The Games are scheduled to hold from September 4 to September19 in Congo, Brazzaville.
The Secretary of PFN, Olabisi Azizi told newsmen in Lagos at the Main Bowl of the National Stadium, that they would comprise 20 men and 20 women..
She said the trials were to select those to prepare for the Africa Games and the World Championship and other major international events.
The IPC Athletics World Championships is scheduled to run from October 22 to October 31 in Doha, Qatar, while the Africa Games hold from September 12 to September 18 in Congo Brazzaville.
“The athletes will resume camping immediately after the trials because Para-athletics is classed under category ‘A’ by the National Sports Commission (NSC).
“We do not know the venue precisely, but the NSC will tell us soon after the athletes have been selected,” Aziz said.
No fewer then 195 athletes from 20 states and some clubs registered for 3-day trials running from July 7 to July 9, in Lagos.
She explained that the PFN-organised exercise were also carrying out a classification of the new athletes for them to know the degree of their disability ahead of the competition.
“We classified the athletes before the commencement of the trials. The aim was to determine the classes that each athlete belongs.
“The new ones were those that we classified as the older ones already have international ranking and classification that we carried out last year,’’ she said.
