Some Nigerians living in
South Africa have observed that even though the National U-23 team, also known as the ‘Dream Team V1’, emerged victorious, against Congo last Sunday in their Olympic qualifier, they failed to convert many scoring chances that came their way.
The Nigerians, who watched the Olympic qualifying match on Super Sport television, said nonetheless, that the team deserved the victory, even with a wider margin.
A Pretoria-based businessman, Jude Duru, said the U-23 team played well but lost several scoring chances.
“By my estimation, Nigeria could have defeated Congo, by as much as 4-1, if the team had converted the numerous chances they had, especially in the first half.
“Sampson Siasia‘s side is good. The team was well organised and I believe they will defeat Congo also in the return match,“ he said.
Another Pretoria resident, Ikenna Onyebunma, said he was impressed at the outing of the Dream Team V1 against Congo.
“The team gave a good account of itself. I am impressed with the players. However, their biggest undoing in the match was inability to score goals.
“Anybody who watched the game will see that Nigeria had more scoring chances than Congo. All hope are not lost. The team has the potential to win the second leg match,’’ he said.
President of Nigeria Union, South Africa, Ikechukwu Anyene, said it would be suicidal for the Congolese to think that they could easily win even during the reverse match.
“ Personally, I believe in the saying that “it is not over, until it is over. Therefore, the U-23 team can win Congolese when they meet again.
“One thing is certain, the pressure will be on the Congolese team. Nigeria can win the return match,’’ he said.
President Abia Progressives Union, South Africa, Vincent Onyema, urged the Nigeria Football Federation to use the U-23 team as the new Super Eagles.
“Nigerians in Cape Town, South Africa that watched the game were impressed with the team.
“Although, they lost several scoring chances, we are happy that they won in the long run. It is our hope and belief that these players will form the new Super Eagles,’’ he said.
