Court Grants Alleged Pickpocket N50,000 Bail

Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday granted bail to Gabriel Samson, an alleged pickpocket teenager, standing trial for stealing
Chief Magistrate A.F. Adeeyo granted Samson, 19, bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum who must have an evidence of tax payment with verified address.
Adeeyo released the accused on bail following his plea of not-guilty to the charge preferred against him.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Jimoh Iseghede, had told the court that the accused committed the offence with one other still at large on July 12, at about 7.30 a.m., around Orile Iganmu Bus-stop.
He said that the accused allegedly picked the pocket of one Okenya Francis who was sitting beside him in a bus going to Lagos Island and stole the sum of N52,000 and a cell phone.
“While the victim was trying to look around for his phone in the bus, the accused suddenly told the bus conductor that he was ready to disembark from the bus.
“Francis; who immediately suspected the accused, immediately, he jumped out of the moving bus, raised an alarm regarding his missing cell phone and money.
“The complainant hotly chased the accused with some other passers-by, and upon catching up with him, they recovered the cell phone from him but they did not find the money on him,” he said.
Iseghede said the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.
The court adjourned the case till July 29 for trial.
