The Rivers State
Tennis Association has suspended daily training sessions which were part of preparation for the forthcoming National Sports Festival expected to hold this year in Calabar, Cross River State.
Tidesports observed that the association has stopped the session which normally hold at the Alfred Diette Spiffs sports complex.
The secretary of the association, Tekenah Lulu-Poku, explained that the team stopped training, due to the present cash crunch occasioned by non-payment of salaries as they could not continue engaging on the activities on empty stomach.
According to him, nothing is going on in the association at the moment. “In as much as we have not been paid, the zeal to work is not there and even the players find it difficult to do their training exercises,” he said.
He however, noted that things would get back to normalcy when the new administration in the state finally settles down, and the issue of lack of salary is addressed. After that, lack of interest in activities which is now the trend would be overcome.
According to him, competition and trails, which are expected to help, select, groom, build and improve athletes have been kept in the cooler for some times now.
He lamented the impact the situation would have on the athletes saying that, “When there is no sporting activities to build up the athletes, how do you expect them to perform during any competition.”
