Senator Bukola Saraki (APC-Kwara Central) was yesterday sworn-in as President of the 8th Senate, while Ike Ekweremadu (PDP-Enugu-West) was sworn- in as Deputy Senate President.
Saraki’s swearing-in by Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr Salisu Maikasuwa, followed his nomination by Sen. Ahmed Yerima (APC- Zamfara West) and seconded by Sen. Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi West).
Saraki was elected unopposed by 57 out of 108 senators-elect.
Fifty-one Senators, including Sen. Ahmed Lawan (APC-Yobe North), were not present as at 10:30 a.m. when Sen. Saraki was returned as elected.
Lawan was a major contender for the seat of the President of the Senate and was the choice of the APC during the Saturday mock election.
Lawan, alongside other supporters, had allegedly gone for a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari aimed at resolving the impasse among the contenders.
Meanwhile, Ekweremadu was sworn-in as Deputy President of the Senate, after he polled 54 votes to defeat Sen. Ali Ndume (APC- Borno-South), who polled 20 votes, while one vote was declared invalid.
The day’s activity started at 10 a.m. with the reading of President Muhammadu Buhari’s proclamation by the Clerk of National Assembly (CNA), Alhaji Abubakar Maikasuwa.
Thereafter, former President of the Senate, David Mark, and other senators-elect took their oath of office.
Maikasuwa later ordered the Deputy Clerk of the Senate, Mr Adedotun Durojaiye, to take roll call of the senators-elect present at the Hallowed Chamber.
Maikasuwa, in the course of the roll call, cautioned all senators-elect against raising any Point of Order.
Election then commenced at 10.30 a.m.
Meanwhile, the newly elected President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, has pledged to be just and fair to Nigerians, and to defend the independence of the National Assembly.
He made this known in his acceptance speech at the inauguration of senators at the National Assembly, yesterday.
He thanked his colleagues for electing him as their leader.
“I am most honoured and privileged to be elected to serve as President of the Senate. I accept with humility and respect the honour you have conferred upon me today,” Saraki said.
“We have today demonstrated that even though we may belong to different parties, we are ultimately united by our common desire to entrench democracy and allow its principle guide our conducts.
“The change that our people voted for is a change from a life of poverty, misery to a life of prosperity, happiness, security and comfort, accountability and respect for democracy.
“This is a change that all of us in the National Assembly must strive to justify. Nigerians want to see a proactive National Assembly.”
He added that as the President of the 8th Senate, he will be guided by the enormity of the responsibilities that the moment imposes on all of us.
Saraki said it will be his responsibility to protect the independence of the legislature in the overall interest of democracy.
He said the quest for autonomy must not lead people into pursuing adverse relations with other arms of government.
He saluted President Muhammadu Buhari for remaining steadfast in his defence of the right of the National Assembly to choose its own leaders.
He thanked all other party leaders who strived to resolve all conflicts, urging that the senators should now move forward with renewed confidence and support.
He also thanked the former President of the Senate, David Mark, for the “uncommon leadership” which he provided in the last eight years which led to the stability of the Senate.
“My dear distinguished colleagues, we are entering at a time when a lot is being expected of us.
“Nigerians expect that the new senate must make laws that will reform the oil sector, the security systems, diversify our economy, create jobs and make doing business in Nigeria more competitive.
“In the coming days, we shall be converging to hammer out an agenda that will help us focus and deliver on the minimum expectations,” he said.
He also sought support and cooperation from senators, and asked members to be united.
“I have inherited from my predecessor a great landmark.
“May the future generation of citizens look upon the 8th National Assembly as a true assembly of our people’s representatives who did their best in the service of our nation.
“I congratulate ourselves for this great day and the beginning of a new chapter in the history of our great nation.
Shortly after the speech, the Senate adjourned to today.
The lawmakers proceeded to take pictures at the lobby with their families and friends.
