Rivers State Government has restated its commitment to improving academic and welfare needs of students in all institutions of learning in the state.
The Deputy Governor of the state, Dr. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo stated this yesterday at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Nkpolu, Port Harcourt, during the 2nd “Female Aspire” conference, held in the institution.
The deputy governor, who was represented by her Special Adviser on Media, Ms Dafini Gogo- Abbey, said the desire of young girls to attain their goals was in line with the vision of the present administration in providing necessary incentives for academic and moral excellence.
Banigo advised students who would form the nucleus of future leaders to be dedicated to their studies and shun  vices that would bring shame to their families and society at large.
She explained that the importance attached to education necessitated the early visit of the state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, to the institution shortly on assumption of office to assess infrastructural needs, and promised to complete the abandoned Law Faculty building of the school.
According to her “the Chief Wike-led Government will soon establish a Faculty of Medicine in the University and also ensure the payment of bursary to all students of the state origin in institutions of higher learning, despite the huge debt inherited from the past administration”.
Banigo urged the students to be the vanguard of the New Rivers Vision by preaching the message of peaceful co-existence, while commending the organizers of the conference for their foresightedness and the management of the institution for maintaining the culture of academic excellence in the face of daunting challenges.
In her welcome address, the wife of the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Mrs. Gloria Fakae, urged the youth not to allow their vision and dream to be buried in their minds but to always take bold steps and make concerted efforts to realise their aspirations.
Also speaking, the Vice President of the Students’ Union Government, Miss Grace Onyekozuru condemned a situation where “women pursue marriage more than purpose” and urged them to discover their identity before they get married.
