Rivers FRSC Sensitises Muslims On Speed Limiter Devices
The need for stakehold
ers to sensitise their members on the installation of speed limiter devices in vehicles and the promotion of road safety in Rivers State and Nigeria has again been emphasized.
The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC ), Rivers State Command, Mr Sunday Oghenekaro made the assertion during a stakeholders forum with members of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Rivers State Chapter, held at the commands headquarters, Port Harcourt, on Friday.
Oghenekaro decried the attitude of some road users, especially drivers and passengers who constitute hazards on the roads which led to traffic gridlock and sometimes needless waste of life.
He said the stakeholders forum was for the Imams in the state to know their roles as help desk towards train-the-trainer and disseminate road safety information to their muslim faithful in the state, pointing out that the corps would build on the existing relationship in its effort to reduce incidences of road crashes.
“Road incidences are no accidents because they are caused. Critical to the causative factors of road crashes is the human element, the road user, Pedestrain, cyclist, motorcyclist, motorist including the commuter and passengers,” he noted.
According to him, some of the actions of the road user that creates hazards are ultimately resulted in road incidents which include lack of and inadequate knowledge of road safety, failure to obey traffic rules and regulations, apathy to traffic signs, code and signals, lack of consideration for other road users and poor self-consciousness to personal safety, stressing that these poor performances by road users are observed on daily basis on our roads.
The Sector Commander reiterated that the corps is desirous of promoting road safety and creating safe motoring environment in Nigeria, and this could only be possible with the collaboration of stakeholders in carrying out their respective roles.
He enjoined the Imams to pass on the message to their muslim faithful, adding that speed limiters serve to check drivers excesses on the road as majority of the drivers show complete disregard on road safety.
In his remarks, the Vice President General, NSCIA Rivers State, Alhaji Nasir Uhor, thanked the corps for their interest on safety of the Muslim faithful in the state and Nigeria at large, and promised to collaborate with the corps and disseminate the information to their members.
