Reptiles, Weeds Take Over Rivers Mega Terminals
Reptiles and grasses have
now taken over the Rivers State Government Mega Transport Terminals at Omagwa, Eleme, Oyigbo and Emohua, as they have been overgrown with weeds.
The Tide reporter observed that the terminals which were built by the erstwhile administration of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi had not been functioning as some have not been completed by the contractors.
According to our reporter, those of Omagwa and Eleme have been completed while the ones at Oyigbo and Emohua are yet to be started due to undisclosed circumstances.
A trailer driver on Eleme Road, Yusuf Abdullahi, said since the building of the transport terminal in the area, nothing had taken place and decried the condition as it is a waste of government resources.
Abdullahi, however, called on the present government to look into the project as it would help decongest the roads of indiscriminate parking of vehicles including trailers.
It would be recalled that the former Commissioner for Information, Mrs Ibim Semenitari in a reaction cleared the air on why the terminals have not been operational.
According to her, the mega transport terminals were conceived to address the problem of traffic congestion in Port Harcourt and its environs, to ensure that all inter-state transports terminate at these terminals, hence the location at the entry points into the city of Port Harcourt.
She opined that the State government partnered with Skye Bank for the project as the government was committed to achieving the over-riding objectives of the strategy, because of the importance to the transportation system in Port Harcourt.
The former Information Commissioner noted that all the terminals should be completed before operation could take place so that the objective would not be defeated.
But it is an eyesore that after investing huge sums of money into the projects, they are yet to see the light of day.
