Polio Immunisation: Govt To Install More Solar Freezers
The Enugu State Government plans to install more solar freezers in all the wards of the 17 local government areas of the state.
The State Director of Public Health, Dr Paulinus Osai, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Enugu that the measure would ensure adequate production of ice pack required for polio vaccines.
Osai said that each of the freezers would be installed in strategic health facilities in each ward so as to take care of all other health facilities within the ward.
“All the health facilities in the ward will be taken care of by one solar freezer that will be stored in strategic health facilities in each ward,” he said.
Osai said that the number of children given vaccines during any immunisation campaign was increasing.
The director urged the Federal Government to step up its effort to supply steady electricity in full capacity in the country.
He said that the capacity of solar freezer may not be able to take care of all the ice pack all the health facilities really needed.
Osai said with the support of the UNICEF, the state Ministry of Health would undertake solar freezer installation in each ward.
He said this would complement the few ones earlier acquired by the ministry in the 17 local government areas of the state.
Osai said that the immunisation in the state has been fully carried out.
He said that the officials involved in the exercise were not only the health workers, but rather officials who were properly trained to conduct the exercise.
He said that the massive involvement of both health and non-health workers in the exercise would ensure that every child under the age of five was immunised.
He said this was why the state has never experienced any drop in the exercise.
