Philanthropist Settles Medical Bills Of Indigent Patients
An Umuahia-based
philanthropist, Dr Chukwunazom Obi,on Wednesday, paid the medical bills of some indigent patients held back at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.
Presenting the cheque of N100, 000 to the management of the hospital, Obi said that the money was to settle the bills of the patients so that they could go home.
“I am moved by passion and concern for the plight of these our brothers and sisters and I am reminded that we are expected to be our brothers’ keepers, hence this gesture,’’ he said.
The Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Abali Chukwu, thanked Obi, the founder of the Good Development and Accountability Advocacy, for the gesture.
Chukwu, who was represented by a senior management staff member, Mrs Orieji Uka, applauded him for coming to the aid of the indigent patients.
Chukwu appealed to other good spirited Nigerians to emulate the gesture by being their brothers’ keepers.
She said that the social service department of the hospital had earlier written to some organisations, appealing for assistance on behalf of the identified indigent patients.
Uka said that the patients had long been discharged but could not go home because they were unable to settle their bills.
