The Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) in Rivers State has condemned last Thursday’s protest by local government council chairmen and councilors, describing it as unfortunate.
The Deputy Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Samuel Wonosike, described the fears of the council bosses as unfounded, noting that the council chairmen and councilors acted on rumour to disturb the peace in the state capital.
The 22 chairmen, councilors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had staged a protest to the Rivers State House of Assembly over alleged plot to dissolve them.
The protesters led by the Degema Local Government Council Chairman, Mr. Sobonye Eli, said they would resist any attempt by the state government to dissolve them because they were elected by the people.
Wonosike while speaking to The Tide at the premises of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex said the lawmakers have been preoccupied by more important issues that had no relationship with the dissolution of the councils.
He assured that the Rivers State Governor, Barrister Nyesom Wike would act within the orbit of the law as regards the 22 local government councils.
According to him, “The days of impunity in Rivers State are gone since May 29. Right now, the rule of law reigns. You can see that the governor had to wait for the Assembly to recommend the dissolution of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) before it did”.
“If they have a case in court, then, why are they protesting?”
