Members of the Na
tional Association of Plant Operators (NAPO), Rivers State branch have petitioned the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Dan Bature over the continued harassment, attempted arrest and threat to life of a member of the union in Bonny, Comrade Harold I Bestowe by two police officers attached to Bonny Divisional Police Station, Inspector S. Alanso and Sgt Ominyi Esheya.
In an eight paragraph petition addressed to the state Commissioner of Police through the Deputy Commissioner of Police, in-charge of Criminal Investigation Department, Port Harcourt and signed by the state Chairman of NAPO, Hon Richard Harry and dated 19th June, 2015, accused the two police officers of disregarding the directive of the police authorities.
According to the chairman, the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Rivers State had on 11th April, 2014 petitioned the Commissioner of Police on an attempted murder of Comrade Harold I. Bestowe and other executive members of the union, adding that the matter was investigated by the state CID, Port Harcourt.
The NAPO chairman disclosed that one Sergeant Philip from the state CID, Port Harcourt was assigned to carry out the investigation in June, 2011, adding that based on the investigation carried out by the CID, the then state Commissioner of Police ordered that all the case files be forwarded to Port Harcourt.
Comrade Richard Harry averred that they were surprised on Thursday, June 18, 2015 to learn that the police officers allegedly disregarded the directive of the former Commissioner of Police and took the matter to Bonny Magistrate Court with suit number, MB/18C/2014.
The petition reads in part thus; may we quote Inspt. S. Alanso in her own words, “the Commissioner of Police has no right in this matter that is already in court. What a nonsense in this country. That a matter already concluded with investigation in Bonny and charged to court, you feel you can go to pay money to some policemen in Port Harcourt and upturn the matter. I shall make sure that you and your members are sent to jail”.
“Consequently, this has clearly shown that she and the IPO are involved in the conspiracy from the beginning to assassinate some of the members of the executives in Bonny. That made them to hurriedly rush some members to court with an inconclusive investigation. This criminal conspiracy has even beclouded their sense of reason and blinded them from recognising the authority of the state Commissioner of Police”.
The chairman threatened that if the police officers are not called to order, he would take legal action against the state police authorities.
When contacted on the matters, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmmad Muhammed could not respond to calls put across to him.
